City of Briaroaks

The City of Briaroaks is a neat bedroom community nessled amoung oak tree just South of Burleson. We are out of the Metroplex proper and yet close enough to enjoy activities if our heart desires.

Change is all around us. Do we change some or do we remain rigid? This is the question that is facing our City. We have Burleson just a few feet away on several sides. We are protected from Burleson annexing us, but what happens when we are completely surrounded? What do we do when we need to expand our City services? How do we preserve our current standard of living as the City infrastructure ages? These are a few of the serious questions that will be facing us in the future.

The freeway Service Roads are changing also. They are changing from two-way to one-way. That change is to happen on June 21st, 2004. It will be one-way from Alsbury to Briaroaks Road Bridge. TxDot will be swapping the locations of the on-ramps and the off-ramps sometime in the future. TxDot and Burleson are working together to build the Hidden Creek Parkway Freeway overpass. The completion of the overpass is still a year or two away. The original one-way project was to go from Alsbury to State Highway 917. A small contengent of concerned citizens ralleyed. This group consisting of approximately 6 people developed a plan to modify the one-way project. The modified proposal was to stop the one-way at the overpass at Briaroaks Road. This plan included the soliciatation of Burleson to join our fight to modify the original one-way plan to State Highway 917.

This small group submitted an agenda item at the January Burleson City Council meeting. The spokesman for our group was Mr. Robert Browning. Mr. Browning addressed the Burleson City Council and explained the safety concerns, the infrastructure concerns and the concerns for Emergency Medical Services if the TxDot proposal was executed as originally planned. Mr. Browning asked the City of Burleson to support the modified proposal and requested that the City of Burleson join forces with the citizens of Briaroaks to champion the modified one-way proposal.

At the conclusion of Mr. Browning's agenda item. The Burleson City Engineer stepped forward and addressed the City Council with an Engineering Study and Engineering Report supporting the very proposal that our group broached with the Council. There was some discussion amoung the City Council Members. At the conclusion of the discussion it was announced that TxDot was in agreement with the Engineering Study and Report. TxDot had agreed to modify the one-way project and stop at the overpass at Briaroaks Road. There was one stipulation. The stipulation was Burleson must agree to fund the Engineering design of Hidden Creek Parkway overpass.

This is a major victory for the Citizens of Briaroaks, but a short lived victory. The one-way to State Highway 917 is not a dead project, just deferred. We need to start working with TxDot to secure funding for infrastruture improvements and enhancements for the future before the one-way project MUST happen.
